ATAL : object
(w/ Sottsass Associati, 1989)
Problem: ATAL, a medium sized producer of furniture and cabinetry in France, needed a "statement" collection of executive furniture to raise the tenor of their offer. The collection would have to be easy to produce, while still providing a distinctive look for the company.
Solution: The design was anchored around a new typology for an executive desk, whose design allowed for a balance of formality and informality. By setting the two front legs back from the front of the desk, space was created to accommodate meeting attendants around its front three sides. Special attention was paid to the use and combination of materials, allowing their richness to contrast with the essential forms.
Impact: The collection made an immediate impact for ATAL, placing it in the forefront of design for executive office furniture. The pieces were widely published in the design press, which served to raise the company profile to unexpected levels.
